City of Austin Chooses Parkeon Multi-Space Meter System E-mail
Tuesday 16 June 2009
Moorestown, NJ, June 9, 2009 – What do you do when your single space parking meters have reached the end of their useful life and constant mechanical failures become a revenue drain? Well, the City of Austin chose Parkeon to replace their 3,800 aging single space meters with 750 solar-powered Strada multi-space meters.

Austin is looking forward to the benefits that many other cities have reaped with their Parkeon pay stations: easier maintenance (fewer units to maintain, wireless communications with meter to know its status at all times, and automatic notification if a problem does occur,) and increased revenue (credit card option increases purchased time, no more piggybacking on other motorist’s parking “leftover time,” and the Pay & Display approach allows more cars along the block).

Parking Department staff aren’t the only ones that will benefit from the new meters. Residents and visitors will enjoy the convenience of credit card payment and the ability to use their current receipt to park at other spaces in the City. Additionally, the City plans to contribute 30% of collected parking money to the city’s Great Streets Program, an initiative to turn the city streets into interactive places with minimal congestion, and displays of community pride and public artwork.

“We are very excited to be moving up to this new, state-of-the-art parking management system”, says Robert Spillar, Austin’s Transportation Director. “This technology will allow our parking staff to be much more efficient with maintenance and collections.”

Along with helping the City maintain the pay stations better, Parkeon’s Parkfolio back-office system will provide Austin with important financial data for reporting and reconciliation purposes.

Austin is also happy to know that these pay stations are made in their sister Texas city of Plano. (Parkeon supports governmental “Buy America” initiatives.) Installation of the pay stations begins in July, but a lot of planning goes into such a large program. “We have enjoyed working with Parkeon on this implementation so far,” says Spillar. “Their staff has been very helpful and knowledgeable.”
