Bus Industry

Parkeon leads the world with its integrated fare revenue and back office systems for the bus industry. The company’s expertise ranges from smartcard technology and electronic ticketing equipment to CCTV security, GPS and mobile data networks.

Parkeon has supplied in excess of 400,000 electronic ticketing machines and associated items of equipment - more than any other bus fare revenue systems supplier in the world.

It recently developed the world’s first seamless approach to on-vehicle systems integration and has just launched a range of solar-powered on-street TVMs.

The company’s Wayfarer technology is specified on every major ITSO smartcard project in Great Britain and also plays a central role in driving significant projects in Australia, the US, South Africa, the Middle East and across Europe.

Canberra Overview

Parkeon technology captures growing market share in Australia February 2011 - Innovative "tag-on, tag-off" ticketing technology developed by Parkeon is earning the company a major slice of the Australian public transport market, with passengers across Canberra the latest to benefit from a contactless smartcard scheme featuring the system.

The Canberra Times

The 'MyWay' electronic ticketing scheme has been unveiled across the Australian Capital Territory with Parkeon providing 500 latest generation Wayfarer200 on-vehicle bus driver consoles, 900 Axio smartcard validators, and back office management suites. The equipment is installed on the city's ACTION bus fleet and in other public locations, ensuring that the new MyWay smartcards are easy to obtain.

The technology is being supplied through Parkeon Pty Ltd, the recently-established Sydney-based arm of the Parkeon Group, to Downer EDI in Australia, the company's long term local partner.
Canberra's 'MyWay' has been developed to meet the city's requirement for a transport ticketing system that is more flexible, that enhances efficiency through improved boarding times and improves data collection, fare reconciliation and journey trend analysis.
Passengers can use the BPAY and auto load (direct debit) options to "set and forget" meaning they no longer need to go and buy tickets. The card will save boarding times with the transaction taking less than a second. The MyWay system will also collect valuable trip data to allow ACTION to deliver an improved bus network in the future.

In London, every single one of the 8,500 buses operating as part of one of the world’s largest transport networks benefits from Parkeon ticketing technology. The Wayfarer 150 ticket machine, with Oyster card capability, is central to the success of the London Prestige On-Bus Revenue System, which handles up to 6 million passenger transactions every day.

Parkeon also delivers 24/7 technical and engineering support to 96 garage systems and the pre-processing data centre linked to the central system. The company has played a key design and engineering role in every element of the London project.

Centro ITSO Scheme

centro-logoIn mid-2008, Parkeon were appointed by Centro, the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive, as prime contractor to provide Wayfarer200 ITSO POSTs across 2,500 buses, covering 20 bus operators and 37 depots. Operators included National Express West Midlands, Arriva, Rotala, Travel De Courcey and a Centrally Managed Service for the region's small bus operators located at Centro's offices.

Following a successful deployment, which included the development of a remote smartcard validation device for 1,800 buses, Parkeon's systems are processing millions of ITSO transactions every month. During 2011 Centro plan to expand the scheme to surrounding areas and introduce nBus commercial products across the regions network – both of which will pave the way for Centro in becoming one of the largest smartcard schemes in the UK outside London.

NoWcard ITSO Scheme

Nowcard-LogoParkeon has been involved as prime contractor with the NoWcard partnership (Lancashire and Cumbria County Councils, Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen unitary authorities) since 2002, during which time 1,900 buses have been equipped with Wayfarer150 ITSO POSTs covering 12 major operators including Arriva Group, Stagecoach Group, Blackpool Transport, Rossendale Transport and Transdev Blazefield. Two centrally managed services were also supplied to Lancashire and Cumbria County Councils covering over 40 small Bus operators across the region.

In 2004 Parkeon delivered the first ever practical on-bus ITSO installation, paving the way to achieving ITSO compliance on the Wayfarer 150 ETM in 2005 (an industry first). Today, the NoWcard scheme remains at the forefront of ITSO innovation, through ground-breaking developments, such as internet top-up, NFC enabled mobile phone technology, ENCTS functionality and cross scheme integration.

Welsh ITSO Scheme

Parkeon was awarded the SEWTA (South East Wales Transport Alliance) contract in 2005, which saw the rollout of Wayfarer150 ITSO POSTS to over 700 buses across 6 operators in the region including Cardiff Bus, Newport Transport and Veolia Cymru. In parallel to this, Parkeon was also awarded the TAITH contract in North Wales, covering some 500 buses in the region for operators including Arriva Wales and GHA. Again, centralised managed services were provided to each scheme to bring all the small bus operators in the respective regions under a single back office for POST configuration, data management and revenue analysis.

2007 saw the introduction of the all-Wales HOPS, which brought together all the regional smart card initiatives under one national project that would in turn assist Parkeon in delivering complete ITSO compliance across all bus operations in Wales, including cross border integration with surrounding
ITSO schemes in England.

SEWTA

Today, Parkeon continues to support the Welsh Assembly Government with new smart initiatives, including delivering commercial ITSO ticketing functionality for the Newport Transport and Cardiff Bus systems – another industry first.

Transport-Scotland-logo-largeTransport Scotland ITSO Scheme

Parkeon has supplied over 1,500 ITSO POSTs to 45 bus operators in Scotland as part of the national free concessionary scheme. It is one of the only ITSO schemes where a supplier has integrated and tested two different POST offerings (Wayfarer150 and Wayfarer200 platforms). Operators benefiting from Parkeon's experience and expertise include Lothian Buses, National Express Dundee, Whitelaws and Perrymans, while Parkeon is also supplying a centralised managed service for smaller operators across all regions.
The Lothian Buses system is one of the most complex smartcard solutions in existence, where both the existing Ridacards and the Scottish Executive's National Entitlement Smartcards are accepted on the same Wayfarer200 POST in dual-read mode. The contract has also seen the development of a new remote thermal printing solution, integration with Edinburgh's Real-Time System and continued support for the 290 PayPoint outlets used to top up the commercial Ridacards.
